Princip was one of three men sent by Dragutin Dimitrijevic chief of the Intelligence Department in the Serbian Army and head of the Black Hand to assassinate Archduke Franz Ferninand the heir to the Austro Hungarian throne during his visit to Sarajevo on 28 June 1914. Ferdinand had accepted the invitation of General Oskar potriek to inspect army manoeuvres in his capacity of Inspector General of the army. The other men sent to assassinate Ferdinand were Nedjelko Cabrinovic and Trifko Grabez. They both succeded and were ordered to commit suicide after but got caught before they could.

In the summer of 1914 Franz Ferdinand and wife Sophie accepted an invitation to visit the capital of Bosnia Sarajevo. He had been informed of terrorist activity conducted by the nationalist organization the Black Hand but ignored the warnings. On the morning of June 28, 1914 the royal couple arrived by train and a car motorcade drove them to city hall for an official reception. The archduke and his wife were in the second car. As the motorcade passed the central police station, a Black Hand agent Nedjelko Cabrinovic hurled a hand grenade at the archduke's car. The driver accelerated when he saw the flying object and the bomb exploded underneath the wheel of the next car injuring two of its occupants along with a dozen spectators. On the route back to the palace the archduke's driver took a wrong turn into a side street a nationalist Gavrilo Princip was waiting. As the car backed up Princip approached and fired his gun a shot Ferninand and his wife. They both died before reaching the hospital. |
At the beginning of World War I Russia’s armies performed poorly. In response, Nicholas II appointed himself commander-in-chief so he could take direct control of the military from Grand Duke Nicholas against the advice of his ministers over the course of WWI, Russia endured major losses and was subject to extreme poverty and high inflation. The Russian public blamed Nicholas II for his poor military decisions and Empress Alexandra for her ill advised role in government. Eventualy Nicholas stepped down from the monarchy and was placed under house arrest and was murderred by the Bolsheviks.

Vladimir Lenin was founder of the Russian Communist Party, leader of the Bolshevik Revolution and architect and first head of the Soviet state. In late 1917 Lenin led what was soon to be known as the October Revolution but was essentially a coup detat three years of civil war followed. The Lenin led Soviet government faced incredible odds. The anti Soviet forces or Whites headed mainly by former tsarist generals and admirals fought desperately to overthrow Lenin’s Red regime. They were aided by World War I Allies who supplied the group with money and troops. Determined to win at any cost Lenin showed himself to be ruthless in his push to secure power. He launched what came to be known as the Red Terror a vicious campaign Lenin used to eliminate the opposition within the civilian population.
